'Io (Hawaiian hawk)

Buteo solitarius

The 'Io is a juvenile (buffy-colored head and overall buffiness) that is starting to get its adult colors. Its legs and cere (fleshy-part above the beak) are yellowish instead of greenish-blue usually seen in juveniles.

The Hawai’i Wildlife Center is dedicated to the conservation and recovery of Hawai’i’s native wildlife through hands-on treatment, research, training, science education and cultural programs. Currently located at the Historic Bond Estate in Kapa’au, the center has plans to construct a new facility, Hawai’i’s first state of the art native wildlife recovery and rehabilitation center; a place of healing and learning.

A 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization, The Hawai’i Wildlife Center will consist of three integrated facilities: a wildlife care and response unit, an education pavilion, and an interpretive courtyard, operating 7 days per week year-round. The center’s objective is to provide the best achievable medical and husbandry care for reported sick, orphaned, injured, and endangered native wildlife, including those affected by natural and man-made disasters.

The Hawai’i Wildlife Center is committed to the principals of science-based conservation. For more information, visit www.hawaiiwildlifecenter.org.
